Martyn Davies from the West Midlands Butterfly Conservation group spoke to us on 10th February about gardening to encourage butterflies and moths and emphasised that we need to be providing flowers that produce nectar for the butterflies and food plants for the caterpillars. Along the way we learned many interesting facts about lepidoptera such as certain butterflies “smell” through their feet and, when looking for the best place to lay their eggs, can tell which leaves have the highest concentration of nitrogen for their caterpillars to feed on.

There is much useful information on the West Midlands Butterfly Conservation website. Well worth a look.
